Your logo is an investment!

How much is (or will be) your company' cost? Answering that question will help you when you are putting together a budget for a logo design. A good logo design costs anywhere from $250 to $50,000, depending on a number of factors. Some large corporations have paid more than double that....but of course, if you are just starting, chances of you having a $50,000 budget are slim.

What IS a Logo?

According to the dictionary, a Logo is: a graphic symbol or mark created for an individual, company or product that translates its use, function or essence into a graphic image. In other words, that is the visual representation of your company (such as Shell's shell or McDonald's golden arches). Your logo is a trademark symbol which will appear on almost anything your company has -- from signs, to your ads, business cards, stationery, brochures and any other place you can think of. Your logo will be a representation of your business. It will be the image of your company.

I want a $100 Logo!

Is it doable? Sure, you can always ask an art student to make a logo for you, or you can even buy one that's designed with Clip Art (the net is full with such examples -- check out my Logo Stories). But is it a good idea? Imagine that you have a meeting with a client -- will you go dressed in a sweat suit and sneakers? So why risk your business image by having a bad, unprofessional, clip-art logo?

Even though you budget might be modest, keep in mind the rule: you'll always end up getting what you have paid for. Because you'll be using your logo for a long time, and in so many different places, consider it an investment. And as such, you can amortize it over the length of time you are in business. The longer you are, the less money you have paid.
